Becki Simmons established SPARK Community Space in October 2020 after undergoing emergency brain surgery in 2019. She realised that many people were in similar situations to herself; struggling because of illness or lacking in confidence to reconnect, especially after the loss of employment and the fear exacerbated by the global pandemic. By offering coffee sessions, isolated and lonely community members receive the opportunity to become befriended – empowering people to feel valued, that they matter; and encouraging them to conquer their fears and spend time outside in the community- creating community cohesion through friendship and support.
When a lone person steps into our community space, they are greeted by a volunteer who will sit with them and offer opportunities to just chat, play a board game or cards, whilst another volunteer takes an order for refreshments. Spark’s concept is fairly simple, but is breaking down barriers and addressing key risk factors by becoming a safe space environment where lonely and isolated people can feel accepted.
